Tata Projects recently handed over the Kasaragod COVID Hospital to the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan. This is a first-of-its-kind, 551-bed COVID hospital, designed and built from ground in the shortest possible timeframe (less than 100 days) — including designing, building and commissioning of facility. This facility comprises 128 units spread across about 5.5 acres.
In addition, a tree plantation initiative under Tata Projects’ Green Thumb campaign was carried out at the venue during the COVID hospital’s handover ceremony.
The facility is capable of handling 550 hospitalised patients at any given point and includes `nursing stations’ and `doctor cabins’. This is a best-in-class facility capable of handling initial diagnosis, isolation and quarantine, etc for complete treatment. It is completely air-conditioned – with specially designed filters and other precautionary measures for COVID conditions.
Construction of the facility was undertaken by the Tata group and executed by Tata Projects (Including supply of cots and side rack), whereas operation of the facility, including handling equipment, will be undertaken by the Kerala Government.
The Kerala Government identified land for the facility on April 8, 2020, and the work of hillock development started on April 9, 2020. Levelling work of the entire 5.5 acres was completed by the Kerala Government in 19 days.
The Kerala Government handed over the land to Tata Projects on April 28, 2020. From thereon, Tata Projects coordinated design and survey, undertook engineered levelling and construction as follows:
Post-handover of this facility, it would be operated by the Kerala Government.
The uniqueness of this project lies in adoption of modern technology in all activities involved in project execution, including design, project management and construction.
