Mumbai: Tata Steel has been named as one of ‘India’s Best Employers Among Nation-Builders’, by Great Place to Work® India in a special category introduced in 2021, as a part of a national study.
Along with this special recognition, Tata Steel has also been featured amongst the top 100 organisations as a ‘Best Company to Work For’ by Great Place to Work Institute that conducts the study.
The Nation Builders category recognises 15 employers who showcased commitment towards kick-starting and re-building the economy. For inclusion in the Nation Builders category of the study, an organisation must be seen as a creator of infrastructure, employment and also be among the highest tax contributors to the government. To make it to the final list, a company must also be promoting, and positively impacting, at least 3 of the 17 UN Global Sustainable Development Goals.
Atrayee Sarkar, vice president, Human Resource Management, Tata Steel, said: “At Tata Steel, we believe the safety, health and welfare of our people, stakeholders and the community at large, are intrinsic to our approach to business. The organisation has imbibed its Founder’s philosophy of business enterprises being the drivers of social upliftment, which is embodied by all Tata Steel Group companies.
“It’s a matter of pride for us to be recognised as Nation Builders with 14 other organisations and also feature as a ‘Best Company to Work For’. The year 2020 was a year of unprecedented transformation where the entire ecosystem came together to embrace the new normal. We adapted to the change with resilience and agility and initiated multiple pioneering policies, including the Agile Working Model and Employee Protection Scheme to financially support the families of employees who lost their lives to Covid. We are committed to constantly evolve our workplace, our perspective towards tomorrow and invest in future readiness – all this to make Tata Steel the best workplace in manufacturing.”
During the pandemic, Tata Steel was amongst the first employers to announce the Agile Working Model last year, which enabled officer employees to move to a location of choice, giving the employees the flexibility to operate from any place within the country. This policy is yet another step for Tata Steel to become more agile, future ready and to strengthen its employee value proposition. Recently, the company announced a Covid-19 family protection scheme for the families of all employees who lost their lives due to Covid-19.
Tata Steel has built an outstanding work culture by introducing path-breaking policies, practices and initiatives for various segments of the workforce. These include policies like 5-day workweek, menstrual leave, paternity leave, adoption leave, satellite office operation, employee assistance programme (titled UMANG) and Take 2 (to provide a platform to the partners of Tata Steel employees and women professionals who are on a career break). The company has consistently worked towards creating an enabling environment for the deployment of women workforce in mines and on shop floors in all shifts.
Last year, the company was named a Top Employer for LGBT+ inclusion by India Workplace Equality Index, the country’s first comprehensive benchmarking study to measure and enable efforts for LGBT+ inclusion.
Every year, more than 10,000 organisations from over 60 countries partner with Great Place to Work® Institute for assessment, benchmarking and planning actions to strengthen their workplace culture. Great Place to Work® Institute’s methodology is recognised as a rigorous and objective work culture assessment process.
