Classrooms and lab complex at Government Higher Secondary School, Vellathooval, inaugurated under Tata Kerala Floods Response Program

During the floods in Kerala due to incessant rainfall in August 2018, Tata Group pledged financial resources to support relief operations in the rescue and emergency response phase, followed by a rehabilitation phase. Relief phase was carried out with distribution of emergency kits and school kits, provision of RO water across three districts and conducting medical camps. The rehabilitation phase focused on construction of aanganwadi centres, schools and other infrastructure, and well as livelihoods recovery initiatives for the worst affected.

As a part of the rehabilitation phase, the Government Higher Secondary School, Vellathooval, Idduki District in Kerala, which was damaged by severe landslides, was identified as a project. Through the Tata Kerala Floods Response Program, the Tata Community Initiatives Trust (TCIT) undertook construction of three classrooms (3,050 sq ft) and two laboratories (3,100 sq ft) for the school. The foundation stone was laid on 13h March, 2021, at the Vellathooval GHSS school complex in the presence of the Devikulam sub collector S Prem Krishnan, IAS, and chief guest K. Mathew Abraham, managing director KDHP Company (P) Ltd, Munnar, Principal Mrs. Shiby AC, Vice Principal Mrs. Shobha V.S and PTA President Mr. Dinu Kuriakose.

The project was completed in November 2021 at an estimated cost of INR 1.1 Crore and the inauguration of the school complex was carried out on 9th December 2021 in the presence of

The Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company (KDHP) - Munnar based associate company of Tata Consumer Products Limited - facilitated the project. The project proposal was prepared by Tata Reality and the construction of the project was done by M/s Delta Projects, Kochi. The project was monitored at all stages of construction by KDHP.
