Tata Steel pays homage to its Founder JN Tata on the eve of his 183rd birth anniversary

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran inaugurated a slew of new projects

Jamshedpur: Tata Steel paid homage to its Founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata on the eve of his 183rd birth anniversary today at Jubilee Park. Various projects were also inaugurated at Tata Steel Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar thereby reassuring the group’s commitment to the city and locations where it operates.

On the eve of Founder’s Day,the illumination at the Founder's Statue in Jubilee Park was inaugurated by N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, in the presence of TV Narendran, CEO and managing director, Tata Steel, and senior officials of the company. He, along with other dignitaries, also paid homage to the Founder. Four solar trees have been installed inside Jubilee Park, which will make the lighting function energy neutral for the year. However, this time elaborate lighting has been done in 39 roundabouts of the city with LED lights and 13 heritage buildings across the city have been illuminated. They include Tata Steel UISL office, Tata Workers’ Union, Fire Temple, Railway Station, Tata Main Hospital, Centre for Excellence, Beldih Church, Baptist Church, School of Hope, Tata Pigment Gate and Golmuri Clock Tower, among others.

Besides paying homage to the Founder and switching on the lighting of Jubilee Park, Mr Chandrasekaran inaugurated an Integrated Sinter Plant Operation Centre (i-SPOC) at the Information Technology & System (ITS) Building inside Jamshedpur Works. Tata Steel, in its endeavour to become a benchmark leader in Industry 4.0, has created the path-breaking entity by setting up iSPOC. The three current operating sinter plant units have been merged into a far-site single operation control centre, about 6km from the plant. The iSPOC reflects a paradigm shift in the operation and control of sinter plants and uses high definition video displays, advanced machine learning models, robust voice communication network to monitor and control the sintering operations. This endeavour, a first of its kind for any Indian Sinter Plant operation, demonstrates a shift from a conventional mindset in enhancing the existing process efficiency, improved synergy and agile decision making.

Mr Chandrasekaran virtually inaugurated a ‘remote trial of first equipment of Pellet Plant & Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) at Tata Steel Kalinganagar at Virtual Reality Room, Engineering & Projects (E & P) Building at Jamshedpur Works.

From the E&P Building, he initiated the ground-breaking and first-panel erection of solar power projects at Central Warehouse, and Cold Rolling Mill at Jamshedpur works. These are part of a larger project for solar power at Tata Steel Jamshedpur and Tata Steel Kalinganagar, comprising ground-mounted, roof-top and floating solar panels. The total capacity for TSK, TSJ and installations at Sonari airport and Domjuri at Jamshedpur is 56MW. This project is a joint effort between Tata Steel and Tata Power towards creating a ‘Greener Tomorrow’.

The Chairman also initiated the first equipment trials for the upcoming Cold Rolling Mill and Pellet Plant projects at Tata Steel Kalinganagar through the digital twin interface. This signifies the completion of a major milestone for the Kalinganagar expansion project from 3 to 8 million tonnes per annum.

The Chairman also inaugurated fitness avenue along the Kadma-Sonari Link Road, a perfect gift for Jamshedpur residents. Fitness Avenue has an open gym facility with 20 equipments, app-based cycle stand, public amenities etc.

Every year, Tata Steel, along with other Tata group companies, celebrates the birth anniversary of the Founder and his vision of an industrial future with community welfare at its core. The Founder`s Day theme for this year is Life@TataSteel which reflects life where profession meets passion, ambition meets compassion, and work meets leisure.
